New Submission

Codex Artbook Uploader

The CODEX series will feature popular folkloric themes from around the world.

The CODEX OBSCURUS will explore the topic of witches and warlocks, people of magic and mystery. We want you to depict them based on what you imagine them to be like, and what you know about them and how they were perceived (or so often misjudged). Maybe you know of them from your own culture, or maybe you have read about them in books or seen them in movies.

We invite you to submit artwork that tells a story, and shows us your take on witches and warlocks. You are also invited to write an accompanying text about your piece and your reasons for making it, or even a story, as short as you want. Although we can’t guarantee the text will also be published, it would be interesting to see the thought processes and stories behind the entries.

If you would like to get feedback on your process, you can do this on our Discord server where this book and others will be discussed with other participants and the jury. Posting here will not count as "published or seen".

What we’ll need from you

  • One 2D or 3D artwork of a witch, a warlock or both
  • JPG format
  • Vertical A4 (297 x 210 mm) + 3 mm all-around bleed
  • RGB
  • 300dpi
  • A submission form with your details filled in
  • (Optional) Sketches, progress images and other extras

Submit your work before the 31st of March 2021 (CEST).

Do nots

  • Do not send us multiple finished pieces to pick from - only one submission per artist. We will have to disqualify anyone submitting multiple.
  • Please do not send us artwork that is entirely about other fantastical beings. They can be part of your composition but witches and/or warlocks must be the key element.
  • Try to not send us a bust or a portrait. Your artwork should tell a story and/or show a scene
  • Don’t join this book if your personal views as a person and artist marginalize other fellow humans. I have no space for homophobes, sexists, racists, xenophobes or any kind of prejudiced individuals and their bigoted ideas in my books.
  • Please don’t send us artwork that has been published before anywhere (including social media). It can be old work but then still it has to be unseen material. If the contrary is found out along the way, it will be pulled from the publication.

Campaign extras

Since the CODEX will be launched using Kickstarter, we will be producing extras for the stretch goals, such as: bookmarks, prints, stickers and other goodies. We will also be making a separate tarot card deck using additional artwork we will commission from selected artists, based on art style and skill level. On the submission form, you will be asked if you would like to be considered for these extras.

Entries will be evaluated by a team of professionals from different backgrounds, and whose artistic styles vary. The judges are:

  • Abigail Larson
  • Angi Pauly Llobet
  • Armand Serrano
  • Bastien Lecouffe Deharme
  • Iris Compiet
  • Justine Florentino
  • Karla Ortiz
  • Mike Azevedo
  • Pauline Voss
  • Thabiso Mhlaba
  • Yangtian Li
  • Yoann Lossel

Accepted entries

Upon the campaign’s completion, 85% of its profits will be divided among the artists whose entries are chosen to appear in the book. Artists whose work is also selected to be featured in the campaign extras (including the tarot cards) will be additionally compensated. Due to the shifted deadline the contracts will be sent out to the finalists in April 2021.
